Noida-based defence-tech startup EndureAir Systems has developed SABAL 20, an electric heavy-payload unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to transport supplies and equipment across remote locations and challenging terrain.

Incubated at IIT Kanpur, the startup has built SABAL 20 using variable-pitch tandem-rotor technology. Its large-rotor architecture is designed to provide efficient lift, stable load carriage, and reliable performance in high-altitude areas and rugged terrain.

Inspired by the tandem-rotor configuration of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter, SABAL 20 is designed for aerial logistics operations in areas where conventional access is limited.

EndureAir Systems' SABAL 20 drone: Specifications and capabilities

SABAL 20 is an electric UAV that combines autonomous vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) with payload delivery capabilities. Its vertical take-off and landing system allows it to operate without a conventional runway, making it suitable for locations with limited infrastructure.

According to the company's specifications, SABAL 20 has a maximum payload capacity of 20 kg and a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 60 kg.

The drone offers a flight endurance of up to 40 minutes, an operational range of up to 10 km, and a maximum speed of 50 km/h.

It is designed to withstand wind gusts of up to 45 km/h and operate across temperatures ranging from -25°C to +55°C.

The UAV can operate at altitudes of up to 5,500 metres above mean sea level (AMSL) or 500 metres above ground level (AGL).

SABAL 20 designed for defence logistics

EndureAir Systems has designed SABAL 20 primarily for aerial logistics, including the transportation of supplies and equipment to remote locations.

The drone can support forward-area resupply operations, where delivering essential materials to personnel in difficult-to-access areas can be challenging.

Its ability to take off and land vertically reduces its dependence on prepared landing sites.

Such UAVs can also be used for transporting medical supplies, supporting emergency response operations, and delivering equipment to locations with limited road connectivity.

The aircraft's electric propulsion system and autonomous flight capabilities are part of its design for logistics missions in challenging environments.

EndureAir Systems' work with the Indian Army

EndureAir Systems has also worked on demonstrating the logistics capabilities of its unmanned aerial systems in real-world conditions.

In 2024, the company delivered SABAL 20 logistics UAVs to support the Indian Army's forward-area resupply operations in eastern Ladakh.

Earlier, in 2023, the company conducted a proof-of-concept flight in Bhutan. During the demonstration, the drone transported a 10 kg bag of rice to a Himalayan monastery and completed the round trip in under 10 minutes.

The demonstration highlighted the potential of UAVs to transport supplies to remote locations where conventional access can be difficult.

With SABAL 20, EndureAir Systems is developing an indigenous aerial logistics platform for operations in challenging terrain.

Its payload capacity, vertical take-off and landing capability, and high-altitude operating specifications are designed to address transportation requirements in remote and infrastructure-limited regions.
