Archer's all-electric Midnight completed piloted flights out of Oakland International Airport, with Los Angeles next on the tour.

Archer Aviation has completed a series of piloted flights around San Francisco Bay with its all-electric Midnight air taxi, operating out of Oakland International Airport. The flights close the Northern California leg of the company’s ‘No Roads’ tour, and Los Angeles is named as the next stop.

The tour moved through progressively more complex airspace. It started in Salinas and called at Hollister, San Martin, San Jose, Mountain View and Hayward before reaching Oakland. Archer said the goal was to show Midnight could operate alongside traffic at the Bay Area’s three international airports, San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. Over three days, the aircraft covered more than 200 miles (322km) across seven cities and reached a top speed of 131mph (211km/h).

One flight, from Oakland to San Francisco’s Marina District, took around ten minutes. Archer said the same journey routinely takes more than an hour by car in traffic. “The Bay Area is the innovation center of the world, but even here Americans lose multiple weeks a year sitting in traffic on bridges and highways,” said Adam Goldstein, Founder and Chief Executive of Archer. “Flying Midnight across multiple cities in Northern California shows we can connect communities with no roads, no traffic, and no emissions in minutes instead of hours.”

Archer credited close coordination with the FAA and with state and local partners for making the flights possible. The company said it will fly next in Los Angeles as it prepares to operate under the White House’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). Before the Bay Area flights, Midnight flew for crowds at the California International Airshow on 22 September and made round trips from Salinas to Monterey and Hollister.

The Los Angeles leg carries particular weight for Archer, which has tied its commercial plans to the LA28 Games. Demonstrating Midnight in that city’s crowded airspace is the logical next test of its urban air mobility pitch.
